Any registered user here, or other interested individual I approve of, can have the domain name and the website at no cost. Well, that’s not entirely accurate, there will be some cost to the person getting the domain name, because they will have to maintain the registration. And they will have to pay someone for hosting the site on the Internet.

Domain name registration costs about $10 per year. That can be through my company, HOSTkabob ($9.95 per year for renewals), or any domain name registrar (Godaddy, Tucows, etc.)

If the new owner also wants the website they can have it, but will have to either move it to a new host or pay for hosting the site on my server. The cost to keep it here, as is, is $3.40 per month, or $40.80 per year. This would be a “turn key” solution, and the new owner would simply take over. I provide my customers with up to 10 hours of free support per month, and would provide as much support as needed during a three month transition period.

If you want the site and want to move it to a new host, it is easier if you choose a Linux host with Cpanel control panel. Ask the host if he will do a “Cpanel to “Cpanel” transfer; that’s nearly painless. I’ll assist in any way I can before the transfer and for a short while afterwards for the transition, but it can be difficult on some hosts such as 1and1, who don’t use “standard” control panels, etc. Contact me and I’ll give you an honest appraisal of the host you are considering.

You can advise other Monty owners of this in the mailing list, other sites, etc. without restriction. All of my content is freely available to use, copy, post on your own site, etc., but please contact any other content owner about their content.

Portsmouth Ratings

The Portsmouth rating is derived from actual race results over time, and is one standard for all locations.  From the US Sailing Portsmouth Yardstick explanation:

The 2008 North American Portsmouth Yardstick for centerboard boats, multihulls, keelboats and offshore classes are posted herein. The Yardstick is a widely used method of rating boats of different classes sailing the same courses and is used by clubs and fleets across the country. It is a time-on-time handicapping system and is derived from actual records of classes of boats with thoroughly documented ratings. Portsmouth Numbers are defined as the length of time boats would take to sail a common but unspecified distance. The formula is easy to use:

                         CT (Corrected Time) = ET (Elapsed Time) X 100 / HC (Handicap)

The 2008 Portsmouth Tables for centerboards doesn’t list the M17 (but has the M15 at 108.2), so perhaps its somewhere else on that site. But Steve R. on the montgomery_boats mailling list, found these numbers back in 2006:

PHRF Ratings

The PHRF ((Performance Handicap Rating Formula") is intended to "level the playing field" when dissimilar boats are racing each other.  The PHRF assumes the boat is sailing to its fullest potential, and the differences between the performance of the boats in the race is then decided by the wisdom, skill and perhaps luck, of the skipper.

The rating may vary from location to location, based on the local racing organization’s calculations.  A single local organization may have different ratings for different sailing venues.  The rating may also change as the committee looks at individual races.  With that understanding, here are some PHRF ratings Montgomery owners have received:

David Fann, regarding his Montgomery 17 "Dulcibella", wrote on 29 Jul 2002:

The Rudder Club of Jacksonville (Florida) rated my M17 for the Mug Race earlier this year. The provisional rating assigned was 295.  Following is part of an E-mail from their measurer:

Congrats on your new boat!  The PHRF ratings listed in the U.S. Sailing Handicap book we use list your ratings as follows:
Augusta – 264
Austin – 294
Percy Priest – 258
Sail Colorado – 313
Yralis – 264
No rating was shown for Lake Lanier.
